NEVER mind the bagful of moolah being dangled to him just to turn professional. For the nth time, Olympic-bound Eumir Marcial has said he'll see action in the Tokyo Summer Games next year.
Marcial said there are indeed lucrative offers for him to fight professionally, adding he is seriously considering accepting one of them which he described as "staggering".
But his comittment to flag and country in the Olympics will come first, Marcial said in an interview by the ABS CBN News on Saturday.
"Tinitiyak ko sa lahat ng Pilipino, lalaban at lalaban ako sa Olympics kasi under sa rules, pwede ang pro boxers na lumaro sa Olympics simula pa noong 2016," Marcial said.
Marcial is one of three local athletes who have qualified for the Olympics, which was postponed to July, 2021 in the wake of the coronavorus pandemic that's making half of the world's population insane.
Even Marcial's mother association--the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines--has assured that the boxer's participation in the Olympics is a a sure thing.
Ed Picson, secretary-general of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines, said the sport’s national governing body, is “committed to work with him to fulfill his Olympic dream and to give support and guidance where and when needed.”
He first showed his potential in 2011 when he won gold in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. He also topped the past three editions in the middleweight class of the Southeast Asian Games and pocketed a silver in the 2019 AIBA World Championships.
Besides accomplishing his task at the Olympic qualifiers in Jordan in March, he also took home the gold in that competition.
Marcial said he wants to succeed in the Tokyo Games, no doubt, and that he will dedicate himself to that end should he choose to simultaneously fight as a professional.
“Wala din akong nakikita na distractions kung mag-professional ako,” Marcial said, “dahil magiging focused na focused ako sa training ko para sa Olympics kasi alam ko na secure ang future ko at ng aking pamilya kung tanggapin ko man ang offer na mag-professional."
