World boxing champion Nesthy Petecio has proven what she could do inside the ring. Now, she's trying to show what she could dish out inside the kitchen.
"Nagluluto din ako," Petecio told ABS-CBN News in an interview recently in Baguio City where she is based since the imposition of the Luzon lockdown last month.
Nesthy's biggest claim to fame came late last year when she won the gold medal in her division during the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia, boosting her hopes of making it to the Tokyo Olympics which was postponed for a year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic troubling the world.
But her bid took a huge blow when she lost in the Asian Qualifiers in Jordan in March in a letdown that forced her to join another qualifiers where she could finally clinch a slot in the Philippine team to the Tokyo Olympics.
Unknown to many, Petecio has a culinary expertise, being an HRM student at the University of Baguio.
"Graduate ako ng 2-year associate course tapos tinuloy tuloy ko na sa University of Baguio," she said.
Petecio said the childhood dish her mom used to serve in their hometown Davao del Sur is her go-to meal.
"Ang specialty ko 'yung luto ng mama ko. Adobong manok, adobong baboy, favorite ko rin lutuin ang sinigang," said the featherweight titlist.
"Nag-aral talagang magluto kasi dati kain lang ang inaatupag ko."
Petecio, currently in Baguio, added cooking helps her battle homesickness since she eats a familiar family dish.
She was supposed to visit Davao after her failed campaign in the Asia-Oceana Olympic qualifiers in Jordan, but the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented her from traveling there.
Despite missing her first attempt at an Olympic berth, Nesty remained unfazed.
"May isang tsansa pa naman. Thankful din ako na hindi man natuloy 'yung makapasok agad sa Olympics ang mahalaga ligtas po kami," said Petecio.
"Kaming mga atleta, gustong gusto naming lumabas para magpapawis pero hindi po namin magawa dahil sa lockdown," she added, appealing to the public to stay at home as much as possible.
"Sana isipin nila na kung mahawa sila, delikado rin ang pamilya nila. Makinig muna kahit saglit lang dahil lahat tayo apektado."
