FILIPINO bantamweight titlist John Riel Casimero, who will defend his World Boxing Organization belt on the Sept. 26 Showtime PPV card, now has an opponent.
Casimero will now face unbeaten Ghana's Duke Micah, said MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons told ESPN's Dan Rafael on Twitter yesterday.
Gibbons said that the 12-rounder between Casimero and Micah is a done deal.
It will be Casimero's first defense of his WBO crown.
Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions has earlier announced alterations Saturday night to the undercard of a six-fight, pay-per-view show on September 26 that will feature Jermall Charlo and Jermell Charlo.
The Casimero-Micah slugfest has been added to the Jermall Charlo-Sergiy Derevyanchenko portion of the show, which will start at 7 p.m. ET (7 a.m. on September 27, Manila time) from a site still to be determined.
The Filipino power puncher was supposed to battle Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue (19-0, 16 KOs) in a 118-pound title unification fight April 25 in Las Vegas, but that ESPN telecast was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A native of Ormoc City, Casimero, who has been training in Las Vegas since mid-March, holds a 29-4 record, with 20 KOs.
The title being at stake for the fight remains pending approval from the San Juan, Puerto Rico-headquartered sanctioning body, as Micah is currently not ranked in the Top 15 bantamweight ratings as of the most recent in July.
