Arellano University cheerleaders stay as No. One

ARELLANO University, continuing their riveting cheerleading rivalry with University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, reigned supreme for the third straight year in the NCAA cheerleading competition yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

In a battle of  throwback themes, the Chiefs Squad dazzled with the 90s music mix to tally 229.5 points and beat the Queen-themed performance by the Altas Perps Squad, which claimed second with 222.5 points.

The two winningest cheerleading programs also had to withstand stiff challenges from Mapua's Cheerping Cardinals, who achieved a podium finish with 211.5 points, and Letran's Lakas Arriba, which from ninth place last year moved up to fourth with 207.

"Nakakatuwa," said Arellano coach Lucky San Juan on the improved competition this season. "For next year, kami ang host, pag-iigihan namin. Hindi lang puwedeng iisa yung puwedeng tumalo sa amin."

Despite some faults in their routine, the Chiefs Squad were still able to pull through in the five-minute run, with their solid first pyramid as their highlight.

"Although merong mga minor error, as a coach, nakita ko pa rin ang heart ng champion. Ginawa nila ang best nila kaya kami nag-champion," said San Juan.

"Isa sa mga dream namin (grand slam) at siyempre, reward sa mga bata, especially sa mga graduating players."

College of Saint Benilde placed fifth with 203 followed by last year's third placer San Beda (189), Emilio Aguinaldo College (178.5) and Jose Rizal University (170.5).

The Season 94 closing ceremony also featured the presentation of champion teams in all events as well the formal awarding of general champions San Beda in the seniors division and Perpetual Help in the juniors division to close out the season.

The spotlight will be on the Red Lions' student-athletes who amassed 698 points to clinch their fourth straight overall title and seventh overall.
