EVEN the Filipino athletes are now doing their share to help in times of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Rio de Janeiro Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz conducted an online weightlifting seminar to raise funds for her kababayans in Zamboanga City and select areas in Bulacan affected by the enhanced community quarantine.
The 29-year-old weightlifting champion said she will prioritize donating nutritious food upon the advise of her ling-time nutritionist Jeaneth Aro.
"Today we are ready to deliver 30 food packages to 30 families in Bustos River, Bustos, Bulacan, and 30 food packages to 30 families in Pioquinto Drive, Mampang, Zamboanga City," Diaz posted in her social media account.
Also doing their share are Jamie Lim (karate), Agatha Wong (wushu), Jack Animam (basketball) and Maxine Esteban (fencing).
Lim, the multi-awarded daughter of PBA legend Samboy Lim, and Wong have teamed-up to launch "Puso: The Battle Against COVID-19", a five-episode IG Live series aimed at raising funds for COVID-19 victims.
The two Filipina athletes will go live on Instagram every Wednesday and Saturday for 30 minutes and will tackle all things sports and health.
"By sharing our experience in our respective sports, we encourage everyone to support us from the comforts of their own homes by listening, learning and most of all, donating," said Lim in her Facebook post.
"All proceeds will be used for PUIs and COVID-19 patients in health facilities and PGH."
Animam, a mainstay of the Gilas Pilipinas women's team that won gold in both 5-on-5 and 3x3 basketball tournaments in the SEAG, is also organizing a fund-raising drive for the Bulacan Medical Center.
"It's just a little help para mapunan yung mga sakripisyo nila," said the 21-year-old National University standout.
Esteban, on her part, organized “A Small Thing Goes A Long Way” fund-raising program that seeks support for frontliners in various hospitals in Manila.
'I feel like the youth has to actively participate and take part in helping the government find ways to reach out to the medical frontliners and the affected communities,” said Esteban, the 19-year-old sophomore student of Ateneo de Manila University.
Esteban, a member of the Philippine team which won the bronze medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, said she has already raised P339,000 for COVID-19 patients in UST Hospital and other medical centers.
