THE Games and Amusements Board (GAB) is determined to enforce the law against illegal gambling, especially with the coronavirus pandemic still raging all over the country.
The GAB-Anti-Illegal Gambling Unit and the Quezon City Police District District Special Operations Unit (QCPD-DSOU) arrested four men for participation in an illegal sabong in Barangay Balara in Quezon City last July 22.
Arrested were four men during an illegal sabong held at Purok 3, Area 5, Laura St., Quezon City.
GAB Chairman Abraham “Baham”Mitra and Commissioners Ed Trinidad and Mar Masanguid said the raid on illegal gambling activities, especially tupadas, is part of the GAB’s mandate to supervise and regulate professional sports.
It is also in response to President Duterte’s directive to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and other government agencies to help in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus disease by maintaining strict physical distancing at all times.
“Matagal na nating ipinapaalala sa lahat na bawal ang mga tupada bago pa man ang pandemic. Ang GAB ay patuloy na gagawa ng hakbang para matigil ang mga ito sa tulong ng ating kapulisan,” added Mitra.
Mitra also thanked the QCPD-DSOU, headed by P/Maj. Manuel De la Cruz, for his help in apprehending the suspects. They are now under custody of the QCPD while appropriate charges are being prepared.
Mitra, a three-time lawmaker from Palawan, lamented the negative effects of illegal sabong or tupada to the proposal of GAB to the IATF to resume legitimate cockfighting activities.
“We are working very hard to convince the IATF to allow the resumption of cockfighting to help alleviate the conditions of the millions of people who depend on it. Hindi nakabubuti itong mga illegal sabong, lalo na hindi nasusunod yun mga safety protocols na ipinatutupad ng gobyerno,” explained Mitra.
Mitra also warned cockfighting personnel, including mananaris, manggagamots and sentenciadors, to avoid illegal activities or face the cancellation of their GAB licenses.
Last Saturday, Mitra and Agusan del Sur Rep. EddieBong Plaza called on cockfighting stakeholders to unite and get their acts together during their appearance in Thunderbird Sabong Nation program of TV host Habagat Bagatsing over TV 5.
The two also reiterated their calls to avoid illegal sabong, especially during the pandemic.
