Manila SEA Games chances in TOPS ‘Usapang Sports’

THE coming 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila will be the main topic when the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) welcomes the new year with its fifth "Usapang Sports" at the National Press Club in Manila on Thursday. 

Invited to grace the 10 a.m. sports forum are 2019  SEAG chef de  mission Monsour del Rosario, SEAG organizing committee executive director Tom Carrasco and swimming champions Eric Buhain and Ral Rosario.

Del Rosario, Buhain and Rosario -- all outstanding athletes during their prime --  will give an update on the country’s preparations , as well as its chances in the coming SEA Games set Nov. 30-Dec. 11 in Manila.

Del Rosario, known as "Mr. Taekwondo", bagged several medals for the country in the SEA Games,  Asian Games and World Championships  from 1982 to 89.

He bagged the gold medals during the  14th SEA Games in Jakarta in 1987 and 15th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1989 and bronze medals in the World Champiobships in 1985 and 1986 in  Seoul.

Buhain is best remembered for the "Miracle of '91", when he captured a record six gold medals in swimming and host Phillipines finished with 91 golds.

A two-time Olympian, Buhain was later appointed by President Macapagal-Arroyo as head of the PSC in 2001 and the Games and Amusement Biard (GAB) in 2005.

Rosario was a PSC Hall of Fame awardee in 2016. He was also a gold medalist in the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games and represented the country in the Munich and Montreal Olympics in 1972 and 1976.

TOPS president Ed Andaya of People's Tonight  said the weekly session is open to the public, including members of the sportswriting fraternity.

TOPS is composed of editors,  sportswriters and photographers of the country's leading tabloids.
