ALL'S well that ends well.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) assured everybody that the release of the monthly allowances of the national athletes will be released this week.
PSC Executive Director Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy, Jr. and Chief of Staff and National Training Director Marc Edward D. Velasco said the delay in the release of allowances was caused by the overhaul of the government agency's payroll administration system following the discovery of a payroll padding scam by an employee.
The delay affected not only the national athletes, but also employees of the government sports agency.
"We apologize for the slight delay in the posting of allowances but rest assured that these will be released by early this week as we have finalized the necessary requirements for the effect of this batch’s posting under the new system," the PSC said in a statement.
"This was a painful but necessary action to ensure that no underhanded schemes are ever done in this service aspect again. In the wake of that sad discovery of a payroll padding scam by an employee, our agency while rocked to its core, was also roused to further strengthen our processes at all fronts. This is a commitment we gave, and one which we immediately went to work to achieve and deliver."
The said allowances will be deposited to Landbank by Monday.
“We shifted systems, in coordination with our depository bank. It was one of the ways we saw to tighten up our process in connection with the payrolling of employees and national team members," explained Iroy.
Said Velasco: "We issued an advisory to the national team to advise them of the delay and the cause of it. We understand that with the crisis raging, the delay is very stressful but the corrections were also needed.”
The PSC officials also called on national sports associations to ensure proper monitoring and reporting on the training and activities of the athletes under their supervision and to religiously submit as these are requirements in the processing of monthly allowances.
The PSC also thanked Sen. Bong Go for his request for the immediate release of the athletes' allowances.
"The PSC Board thanks Senator Bong Go for once again showing his sincere concern for sports and the Filipino athlete. We appreciate the support and guidance you have been giving the sports community."
