CERES-Negros FC, the most successful Philippine football club team in the previous decade, will become United City Football Club.
MMC Sportz Asia will now manage the club through the AFC Cup competitions after last Thursday’s signing of the agreement that formally cemented the transfer of ownership from Ceres-Negros FC.
“We would like to thank Mr. (Leo Rey) Yanson and his team for agreeing to the transfer of the club into our name as this allows the players to continue participating in the Philippines Football League and hopefully also in the AFC Cup for the 2020 season,” said MMC Sportz Asia chief executive officer Eric Gottschalk.
“We will now immediately apply for the permission with the PFF to rename the club to 'United City Football Club' and request the PFF to support our statement of intent to continue participating in the AFC Cup,” he added.
Gottschalk recognized the achievements of the Busmen, who were leading Group F in the second-tier continental club tournament when play halted last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We would like to honor the legacy which Mr. Yanson created when he founded the Ceres Negros club and we will try to continue the development of Philippines football,” said Gottschalk.
