World Slasher Cup postponed

April 27, 2020

SORRY, cockfighting fans.

The 2020 World Slasher Cup 2 International 9-Cock Derby, dubbed as the “Olympics of Cockfighting”, will not push thru on May 18-24.

Games and Amusement Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra has decided to formally withdraw its permit for the staging of the event at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mitra said the cancellation of the permit for the prestigious seven-day cockfighting competition was due to the government decision to extend the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila to fight the spread of the COVID-19.

In a letter to Araneta Coliseum chief operating officer Irene Jose last April 24, Mitra asked for “patience and understanding as these measures are in compliance with the directives issued by President Duterte.

“Upon recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force, President Duterte decided to extend the ECQ until May 15."

No new date was announced for the derby, although sources said it could be in the third week of June at the earliest.

Mitra lauded the support of top cockfighting organizations in the country for supporting the call to temporarily stop their operations and help prevent the spread of the virus.

Among these cockfighting groups are the International Federation of Gamefowl Breeders Association (FIGBA), Inc. and Pambansang Federation ng Gamefowl Breeders (DIGMAAN) Inc.

Meanwhile, Mitra also recommended to ban all derby personnel recently apprehended by authorities for violation of Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code.

“Ayaw natin na maulit pa yung may mga ilan na nagpapa-tupada sa kabila ng umiiral na ECQ sa kanilang mga siyudad,” explained Mitra.
