Lady Archers try to bounce back big from sorry setback

DEFENDING champion La Salle tries to break out of a three-way logjam in first place when it tangles with University of Santo Tomas today in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Spikers’ response to their loss against one of the title favorites remains to be seen in their 4 p.m. clash with the Tigresses.

UP pinned La Salle its first defeat of the season with a grind-it-out 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12 victory Saturday.

For 11-time champion coach Ramil de Jesus, the Lady Spikers were challenged by a much determined Lady Maroons side and was not angry after that setback that shattered their myth of  invincibility.

“Wala, puro motivation lang kasi first time namin naka-encounter ng sobrang hirap talunin eh,” said De Jesus. “Mas gusto ng kalaban na manalo kaya sabi ko sa kanila, yun ang naging factor, mas gusto nilang manalo.”

La Salle is currently tied with UP and Ateneo for the league’s best record at 3-1.

UST, which split its first four matches this season, is facing a bumpy grind to stay within the top four range.

The Tigresses will miss the services of Milena Alessandrini, who will be out for at least two weeks due to an ACL tear in her left knee. The Fil-Italian’s return in the taraflex floor will heavily depend on her rehab.

Without Alessandrini, UST’s offensive burden will now be on the shoulders of the veteran-rookie duo of Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure.

In the men’s division, FEU shoots for its fifth straight victory against UE at 8 a.m., while UST takes on La Salle at 10 a.m.
