COLLEGE of Saint Benilde, no letting up a day after assuring itself of a return semifinals trip, swept San Sebastian, 25-17, 25-16, 25-14, yesterday in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Rachel Austero had two blocks to finish with 13 points, Klarisa Abriam chipped in 11 hits while setter Jewel Lai tossed in 21 excellent sets for the streaking Lady Blazers.
On a seven-game roll after a season-opening loss to defending champion Arellano University, St. Benilde moved in a tie with idle San Beda in second place.
“Sana makapag-twice-to-beat advantage, kung sakali,” said Lady Blazers coach Jerry Yee.
St. Benilde, which won its lone title in the league three seasons ago, will wrap up its elimination round campaign against already-ousted Mapua on Monday.
If they ended up at 8-1, the Lady Blazers’ semis ranking will then depend on this Tuesday’s rematch of last year’s Finals between the Lady Chiefs and the Lady Red Spikers.
Arellano is eyeing for a nine-match sweep to jump straight to the best-of-three championship and make the semifinals a step-ladder format.
After a disappointing finish last season, St. Benilde made a huge turnaround by making it back in the Final Four in Yee’s first year with the Taft-based squad.
