Lady Eagles return to nest with a 'bonus'

ATENEO overcame a close extended second set to repulse already eliminated Adamson, 25-16, 28-26, 25-17, and secure the twice-to-beat semifinal  incentive in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Kat Tolentino had 17 points, including five blocks, while Maddie Madayag had three blocks for a 13-point effort for the Lady Eagles who improved with  the league's best record at 11-2.

Earlier, titleholder La Salle moved within a win of clinching the remaining twice-to-beat slot in the Final Four with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 romp of also-ran University of the East.

After a block-less outing against the Lady Spikers, the Lady Eagles simply didn't dwell on that, moving forward with their improved net defense.

Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro said his team is taking things one step at a time.

"Ang sabi ko sa mga players, it is a chance. It is a great opportunity to get that twice-to-beat and we have a chance of making it to the Finals. But we really need to work hard for it to have that chance. Kapag dumating ang opportunity na iyan, we have to be ready," said Almadro.

Rookie Jolina dela Cruz and Aduke Ogunsanya shared the scoring mantle for the Lady Spikers with 10 points while setter Michelle Cobb tossed in 23 excellent sets to go with three points.
