(Filoil Flying V Centre)
12 noon – SSC-R vs LPU (Women)
2 p.m. – EAC vs CSJL (Women)
SAN SEBASTIAN, seeking to regain its status as one of the top teams in the NCAA after missing the Final Four last year, plays Lyceum of the Philippines University today in the women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Lady Stags, who still have Joyce Sta. Rita, Nikka Dalisay and returning Iris Oliveros, open their campaign against the Lady Pirates at 12 noon.
Last season’s bottom teams Letran and Emilio Aguinaldo College clash in the day’s other match at 2 p.m.
The four teams hope to join opening day winners Arellano University and San Beda, last season’s Finals protagonists, for the early lead.
With the departure of scorer Grethcel Soltones, San Sebastian finished sixth place at 5-4 – the worst since Roger Gorayeb handled the highly-successful women’s volleyball program in the mid-80s.
Sta. Rita, who carried the offensive burden last year, could very well get huge support from Dalisay and Oliveros. Gorayeb is pinning his hopes on his rookie-laden squad to keep the Lady Stags going.
Without Cherilyn Sindayen, who skipped the previous tournament due to academics, LPU won only once last season.
Aside from having Sindayen back in harness, the Lady Pirates will parade transferee Ciarnelle Wanta in their bid to make a turnaround.
Two more teams, College of Saint Benilde and Mapua, will make their respective debuts tomorrow. The Lady Blazers, now under coach Jerry Yee, take on the Lady Chiefs in a showdown of early favorites at 2 p.m., right after the Lady Cardinals and the Lady Red Spikers take the floor at 12 noon at the San Juan arena.
