THE players’ fitness will put into test with the compressed UAAP volleyball season starting on March 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The league announced yesterday that there will be Tuesday games aside from the regular Wednesday-Saturday-Sunday schedule to make up for matches missed because of the postponement due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The centerpiece second semester competition was supposed to begin last Feb. 15 but was put on hold as a public health precaution.
It also preserved an equal billing for the men’s and women’s volleyball tournament, which made a major scheduling tweak this season.
Action will begin with 29-time women’s champion Far Eastern University facing University of the East at 4 p.m., right after their men counterparts take the floor at 2 p.m.
Ateneo will begin its title-retention campaign in the women’s division the following day (March 4) against University of the Philippines at 4 p.m. right after duel between the men’s squads at 2 p.m. at the same Pasay venue.
In the morning session, National University set in motion its three-peat bid in the men’s division against University of Santo Tomas at 9 a.m. The Tigresses, who placed second to the Lady Eagles last season, will play the Lady Bulldogs at 11 a.m.
This year’s first rivalry game between Ateneo and La Salle is set at 4 p.m. on March 7 at the Mall of Asia Arena. The Lady Eagles were 0-2 against the Lady Spikers last season.
Long-time volleyball rivals FEU and UST will be the featured match-up for both women and men starting at 2 p.m. on March 8 also at MoA. On the same day, Adamson will make its much-awaited women’s debut against NU at 11 a.m.
The rematch of last year’s men’s volleyball championship between the Bulldogs and the Tamaraws is set at 9 a.m. on March 22 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Eagles and the Tigresses, who figured in a classic three-game Finals series last season, will cross paths at 4 p.m. on March 29 also at MoA.
Aside from the Mall of Asia Arena, which has booked for 10 playdates, rirst round matches will also be played at the newly-renovated Philsports Arena.
The first matches in the Pasig venue formerly known as ULTRA will be on March 15, when La Salle and UST collide in a rematch of last year’s women’s Final Four at 11 a.m., right after their men’s teams duke it out at 9 a.m. UP and Adamson clash in the afternoon session starting at 2 p.m.
