UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas has secured the commitment of UAAP Season 82 high school boys best blocker Paul Colinares to remain in the school's men's volleyball program.
Colinares is determined to help the Growling Tigers of coach Odjie Mamon restore their old glory and become one of the elite teams in the men's division.
With the emergence of Ateneo and National University, and Far Eastern University revitalizing its program, UST has struggled in the past few years. The Tigers went 0-2 before Season 82 was terminated last April due to COVID-19 pandemic.
“Pinapanood ko lang sila dati pero kakampi at makakalaro ko na sila ngayon. Naroon ang experience nila at narito ‘yong eagerness ko para makasabay sa kanila,” said Colinares in an interview with the school's campus paper The Varsitarian.
Adjustment won't be a problem for Colinares as the Mariveles, Bataan native have joined several trainings with Mamon's team.
“Gusto kong makatulong sa team kahit rookie pa lang ako,” said Colinares. “I expect a higher level of competition, more on time management and ‘yong pagiging mature ko sa paglalaro.”
Also lured by the Blue Eagles, Colinares did not hesitate to stay in España.
“I stayed dahil sila ‘yong unang tumanggap sakin no’ng mga panahong wala pa akong gaano’ng skills,” said Colinares.
Behind Colinares, UST placed fourth in the Season 82 high school boys volleyball tournament won by Nazareth School of National University.
